These socks were inspired by my love of open backed shoes. I thought it would be interesting if the motif went straight down to the sole of the sock, instead of being distorted by a heel flap and gusset.
The mock cable design is charming enough to keep you interested, but simple enough to work quickly. The majority of the sock is stockinette, allowing the gorgeous colors of the yarn to shine and show off the unusual shaping. The side increases shift the instep stitches across the foot where they flow into a spiral at the toe.
Each foot twists in an opposite direction for symmetry, from the spiral side motif all the way through to the end. The mock cable pattern on the leg is flatter than a traditional cable, so they fit well in shoes.
